Sermon: God Our Help
Psalm 121 (New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition)
1 From Creator and Provider to our strong Rock who steadies us in times of adversity, to the Prince of Peace who call1 I lift up my eyes to the hills— from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day nor the moon by night.
Key Idea of the Sermon
This summer we are exploring some of the names and titles for the Divine. Today we reflect on the title Our Help. We can trust that God is faithful and will never leave us. God who made the highest hills is with us day and night. God is our help in our coming and going – no matter where the journey of life takes us – God is our ever-present Sojourner.
Questions for Reflection
• How do you feel knowing that God is our Help at all times and in all places?
• In what ways do you turn to God as your Help? How is that of encouragement to you? Are there people in your life who could use encouragement this week?
• Sometimes exploring new ideas or names for God leaves us feeling lost or confused or puzzled. In what ways can we reach out to God our Help to show us how to continue and grow in our relationship with God and with others in order to love as people of Jesus’ love and kindness?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
• Maybe you’d like to look up to the heavens or up at hill if you have one near by or envision one you’ve seen before and spend time imagining God’s love reaching from the heavens and the earth from the highest hill to the deepest valley. Breathe in and remember you are held by this very same God no matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey. Breathe out and find hope and peace in know you are called loved and loving child of the Creator of the seas and the skies.
• Today was celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Take time to research one or more of the leaders (listed below) in the work of Disability Justice (from Tatum Tricarico’s Blessed is the Body). Take time to consider how God is calling to us individually or as the collective congregation of Friedens United Church of Christ who is part of the body of Christ on earth to continue to learn and join in working for the growing of God’s peaceful and equitable community for all – God’s shalom.
