Sermon: Bread of Life
John 6: 1-12, 35 (New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition)
1 After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, also called the Sea of Tiberias. 2 A large crowd kept following him because they saw the signs that he was doing for the sick. 3 Jesus went up the mountain and sat down there with his disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the festival of the Jews, was near. 5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place, so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.”
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Key Idea of the Sermon
Today we explore the idea of Jesus as the bread of life, an image closely related to living water (from John 4). As in our own day, there were many facing food insecurity in Jesus’ place and time. Jesus set for us an example of compassion, trust, and generosity as he and his disciples met this basic need. Jesus understood an even deeper hunger in the human soul—the need we all have for acceptance, meaning, purpose, and a life-saving connection with our Creator. Jesus offers a tried-and-true way to satisfy this hunger.
Questions for Reflection
• A child offered what he had, which turned out to be the first step in feeding thousands. What do you have to offer?
• When we share what we have, miraculous things can happen. When have you experienced the miracle of sharing in Christ?
• This story brings to mind the sacrament of Holy Communion? Can you make the connection between Passover and Communion? How is Communion a way for us to receive the bread of life?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
Let the Season of Pentecost be a time of making disciples. Who in your circle of influence would benefit from knowing the grace and peace of Christ? Look for the opportunities Christ gives you to share why following the Way matters. Invite those who show an interest in discipleship to worship and serve with you.
