Luke 8: 43-48 (New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition)
43 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from a flow of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all she had on physicians, no one could cure her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, and immediately her flow of blood stopped. 45 Then Jesus asked, “Who touched me?” When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing against you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I noticed that power had gone out from me.” 47 When the woman realized that she could not remain hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him and how she had been immediately healed. 48 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”
Key Idea of the Sermon
The many names and titles of the Divine throughout the Bible help to express the qualities and characteristics of God. Today’s story identifies Jesus as a healer. This title emphasizes the way God in Jesus cares about our health and wellbeing. It is reassuring to know that God desires to bring a healing and renewing Spirit to our whole selves—mind, body, and soul. Since God is the source of good (see Romans 8:28), we affirm that the maladies we experience are not God’s way of punishing us. God in Jesus chooses to be with us in our suffering and death, so we are saved from hopelessness, loneliness, and fear. Divine healing is not always a cure. Often God’s healing is the way grace and peace put us at ease instead of dis-ease as we move through this mortal life.
Questions for Reflection
• When the woman touched the fringe of Jesus’ cloak and experienced healing, Jesus felt power go out from him. How have you experienced the power of Jesus’ healing presence? Have you experienced the way caregiving is draining work?
• Why do you think the woman tried to hide this experience of healing? Do you ever try to hide your weaknesses?
• What do you think Jesus meant when he said, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace? Is faith the precondition of healing?

Look for the opportunities Christ gives you to share why following the Way matters.
