Sermon: God of Many Names
Psalm 139: 13-18 (New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition)
13 For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.
17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
18 I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am still with you.
Key Idea of the Sermon
From Creator and Provider to our strong Rock who steadies us in times of adversity; from the Prince of Peace who calls us into a ministry of justice and righteousness to the Good Shepherd who nurtures, comforts, and guides us; and on to Emmanuel which means God is with us -this summer we are exploring the names and tiles for the Divine. Today we reflect on the title God of Many Names which reminds us that God is beyond any human words. We will explore other ways we might name God through God’s creating love – names like Weaver and Potter, and how the many names of God help us grow in our understanding of, and in relationship with God and others.
Questions for Reflection
Is there a name for God with which you most resonate? Is there a name for God that puzzles you or leaves you feeling curious? Are there any names for God which leave you feeling uncomfortable? If so, why? How might this influence how you interact with God and all God has made?
Is there an aspect of yourself that you don’t appreciate or value? How does knowing God made our bodies, minds, hearts, and souls wonderful and beautiful make you feel? Are there ways you are experiencing God molding you and shaping you with tender care? Would you like to take time to thank God for making you who are? Are there specific challenges you’d like to invite God’s tender touch and guidance to mold and shape to continue to grow as a follower of Jesus who shares his mercy and kindness with others?

Spiritual Practices to Try 1) Reach out to someone and ask them about the names of God with which they most connect. How does this expand your relationship with God and with your conversation partner? Or
2) Perhaps you’d like to try one of these breath prayers: Inhale – God wove me together; Exhale – Beautifully and wonderfully Inhale – God weaves us together; Exhale – Beautifully and wonderfully Or Inhale – Please shape me and mold me, O God; Exhale – I am formed and beloved by the Sculptor of the heavens and earth. Inhale – We are being shaped and molded for peace; Exhale – I am held and adored by the Painter of the seas and skies.
