Scripture Reading: Isaiah 9: 2-7

Sermon: Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9: 2-7

New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. 3 You have multiplied exultation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 4 For the yoke of their burden and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5 For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. 6 For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders, and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince o

Key Idea of the Sermon

From Creator and Provider to our strong Rock who steadies us in times of adversity, this summer we are exploring some of the names and titles for the Divine. Today we explore the idea of Prince of Peace. This passage is usually read during Advent when we are preparing for the rebirth of Christ in our lives at Christmas. Disciples see Jesus in this passage, clarifying his identity and purpose. The image of Christ Jesus as Prince of Peace resonates with authenticity. In the gospel stories and in our own experiences of following the Risen Jesus we have come to know the wellbeing, harmony, justice, and righteousness that God intends for creation. Jesus the Christ is our Prince of Peace calling us to join in his peaceful ministry.

Questions for Reflection

• The people who walked in darkness is an allusion to those who have not yet come into the light of faith. This is yet another connecting point with Jesus who leaves no one out of the saving grace of God. How are you enlarging the circle of grace and peace?

• The day of Midian is a reminder of the way God delivered God’s people from an oppressive and violent neighbor (see Judges 6:1-16)? The Prince of Peace overcomes evil with peace, justice, and righteousness. How does this example suggest a way forward in our time and place?

A Spiritual Practice to Try
Let the Season of Pentecost be a time of making disciples. Who in your circle of influence would benefit from knowing the grace and peace of Christ? Look for the opportunities Christ gives you to share why following the Way matters. Invite those who show an interest in discipleship to worship and serve with you.
