Key Notes from the reading & sermon:

Scripture Lesson

Sunday, June 14, 2026

Scripture Reading: Psalm 18: 1-6

Sermon: My Rock

Psalm 18: 1-6

1 I love you, O Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, so I shall be saved from my enemies. 4 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of perdition assailed me; 5 the cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.

Key Idea of the Sermon

Last Sunday we explored some of the big theological ideas that come from thinking about God as Creator. Our inspiration was the liturgical poetry that is Genesis 1. If you would like to listen to the sermon you can find previous services of worship at www.FriedensUCC.org. Today we are affirming another image-rich description of the Divine—my rock. We find this image in a hymn we know as Psalm 18—a Song of Thanksgiving. The context of this image suggests a meaning related to Divine strength and protection. Our experience suggests that the presence of the Divine is a sturdy and steady place that helps us feel safe and secure. When it is difficult to find our footing in an unpredictable world, it is reassuring to be able to count on the faithfulness of God, who is my rock.

Questions for Reflection

• In the lyrics of today’s song from Psalm 18:1-6, what are the specific situations listed from which God delivers us? What would you add to this list from your own experience of God’s strength and protection?

• How does it make you feel to know that when you cry out to God, your voice is heard? What difference has it made to take sanctuary in the rock and refuge of the Divine presence?

A Spiritual Practice to Try
Let the Season of Pentecost be a time of making disciples. Who in your circle of influence would benefit from knowing the grace and peace of Christ? Look for the opportunities Christ gives you to share why following the Way matters. Invite those who show an interest in discipleship to worship and serve with you.
