Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
Scripture Lesson
Sunday, June 7, 2026
Scripture Reading: Genesis 1: 1-12
Sermon: Creator and Provider
Genesis 1: 1-12
When God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
And God said, “Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” So God made the dome and separated the waters that were under the dome from the waters that were above the dome. And it was so. God called the dome Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.
And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good.
Key Idea of the Sermon
Today we begin a summer series on the names of God. The many names of the Divine help to reveal the character of one who is far beyond mortal thoughts and ways. One of the most common titles for God is Creator. Across cultures and from the beginning of civilization, people have had thoughts and told stories that articulate a deep feeling that we are not here by accident. We are here on purpose; we have a Creator. The ancient Hebrew poetry of Genesis 1, makes some bold theological affirmations: the Creator speaks creation into being, the Creator is good, the Creator takes pleasure in a good creation, and the Creator provides for creation. We will connect these affirmations about God to our life experience.
Questions for Reflection
• The disciples do not have to search for the Divine, they are met by God in Christ. How does Christ meet you along your daily journey?
• This passage reminds us that discipleship is not dependent on a complete belief in Christ. We are accepted with our doubts and shortcomings as we turn to Christ with an open heart. What is getting in the way of your relationship with the Risen Jesus? Be honest with Christ about your challenges to faith and follow any way!
A Spiritual Practice to Try
Let the Season of Pentecost be a time of making disciples. Who in your circle of influence would benefit from knowing the grace and peace of Christ? Look for the opportunities Christ gives you to share why following the Way matters. Invite those who show an interest in discipleship to worship and serve with you.
