Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
Scripture Lesson
Sunday, June 28, 2026
Scripture Reading: Psalm 23
Sermon: Good Shepherd
Psalm 23
1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; 3 he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil, for you are with me; Key Idea of the Sermon your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Key Idea of the Sermon
From Creator and Provider to our strong Rock who steadies us in times of adversity, to the Prince of Peace who calls us into a ministry of justice and righteousness, this summer we are exploring some of the names and titles for the Divine. Today we reflect on one of the most comforting of images of the Divine—Good Shepherd. The Shepherd’s Psalm, #23, is also one of the most familiar of Biblical passages. Unlike those who first gave voice to this song in worship, we have not had much experience caring for sheep and goats. But we can relate to life as a journey and our God as a trustworthy guide, whose nurturing and caring presence sees us through step by step.
Questions for Reflection
• When was the image of the Good Shepherd first introduced to you? What kind of memories do the words of Psalm 23 bring to mind?
• How do you experience the Divine presence in the darkest of valleys?
• How do you make sense of the phrase, you prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
Let the Season of Pentecost be a time of making disciples. Who in your circle of influence would benefit from knowing the grace and peace of Christ? Look for the opportunities Christ gives you to share why following the Way matters. Invite those who show an interest in discipleship to worship and serve with you.
