Scripture Reading: Luke 24: 44-49
Sermon: You are Witnesses
Luke 24: 44-49
44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised, so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”.
Key Idea of the Sermon
Today we continue the Easter Day narrative recorded by Luke. We studied the Walk to Emmaus, and we were inspired to pay attention for the presence of the Risen Jesus, who is our constant companion. Jesus joins us on the journeys of our lives offering guidance and support, making himself known in the community of disciples as we worship and break bread. We also followed along as Luke explored the nature of the Risen Jesus, and we consulted Paul’s thoughts about the resurrection in I Corinthians 15. Jesus seems to have a heavenly form that is both physical and spiritual, a foreshadowing of our own resurrection. This is another mystery that will be revealed when we take the journey through death to the promised new life. Today’s text identifies the mission of the followers of the Risen One. We are to bear witness to the death and resurrection of Jesus as a message of transformative grace that is meant to change the whole world in line with God’s values.
Questions for Reflection
• During the Easter season we have studied stories of Jesus’ new life and we have practiced paying attention to Jesus’ constant companionship. How is this study and practice impacting your spirit and discipleship?
• What are examples of the way you can witness to the good news of new life in word and action? Who are the people in your circle of influence who need and would be open to receiving your witness? When will you act on this opportunity?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
As you walk through each day this week keep your heart open and your attention alert to Jesus’ companionship. Stay mindful of signs of new life and fresh perspectives and follow that way.
