Scripture Reading: Luke 24:50-53
Sermon: Jesus Blessed Them
Luke 24:50-53
50 Then Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and they were continually in the temple blessing God.
Key Idea of the Sermon
Today we conclude the Easter Day narrative recorded by Luke. We studied the Walk to Emmaus, and we were inspired to pay attention for the presence of the Risen Jesus, who is our constant companion. Jesus joins us on the journeys of our lives offering guidance and support, making himself known in the community of disciples as we worship and break bread. We also followed along as Luke explored the nature of the Risen Jesus, and we consulted Paul’s thoughts about the resurrection in I Corinthians 15. Jesus seems to have a heavenly form that is both physical and spiritual, a foreshadowing of our own resurrection. This is another mystery that will be revealed when we take the journey through death to the promised new life. Last Sunday we studied the mission the Risen Jesus gives his followers. We are to bear witness to the death and resurrection of Jesus as a message of transformative grace that is meant to change the whole world in line with God’s values. In the final three verses of the Gospel According to Luke, The Risen One returns home to heaven. The blessing Christ offers as he ascends leaves disciples feeling grateful and worshipful.
Questions for Reflection
• A blessing is a prayer of love and a promise of continuing support and care. How do you experience Jesus’ love, support, and care? Is there someone in your circle of influence who needs your prayer of blessing and promise of care?
• The disciples have been instructed by the risen Jesus to remain in Jerusalem until they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (vs. 49). While they wait for this promised gift that will empower their ministry, they are continually in the temple blessing God (vs. 53). God meets our needs in worship, but this text suggests worship also moves us to be a blessing. How does worship serve you and then inspire you to serve others?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
As you walk through each day this week keep your heart open and your attention alert to Jesus’ companionship. Stay mindful of signs of new life and fresh perspectives and follow that way.
