Pastor’s Corner – Sunday, August 9
I could use some rest. How about you?
Did you realize that exhaustion might be a symptom of arrogance? We can imagine that things will not run smoothly without us. Sometimes this is called a “messiah complex”, a sense of self-importance that can lead us to a costly falsehood—we are the lynchpin to our family, work, church, and community. We never stop because we think it might come tumbling down without us.
Though each of us matter, and each one definitely has a gift to share and an influence to exercise, it is God in whom we live, move, and have our being (Acts 17:28).
Jesus recognized this pitfall for his well-intentioned followers when he said: Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matthew 11:28-30). We do not have to be the messiah, we turn to the Messiah to find the help we need.
Let us make it a habit to give God the credit and allow Christ to do the heavy lifting. This will empower us to do our part and to stay rested and renewed as our Leader intends.
Yours in Christ,
Marc
