Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
Scripture Lesson
Sunday, Nov. 23, 2025
Scripture Reading: Colissians 1:11-20
Sermon: All the Fullness of God
Colossians 1: 11-20
11 May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, so that you may have all endurance and patience, joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 God has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, 16 for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.
Key Idea of the Sermon
It is no surprise that this passage is the appointed epistle for the Reign of Christ Sunday. On the scale of understanding Jesus the Christ from fully human to fully divine, this text is considered a high Christology, affirming the divinity of Christ. This view is summarized nicely by the phrase in Christ all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell (vs. 19). In other words, we come to know God as we know Jesus. This view invites disciples to be faithful by keeping the focus on Jesus.
Questions for Reflection
• How do you understand Jesus? Is Jesus more fully human or more fully divine? Why do you hold your view and how does it impact your discipleship?
• Some disciples believe that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine. How would you hold these ideas together? What stories of Jesus reveal the humanity of Jesus, and which ones reveal the divinity of Jesus?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
In your prayer time this week thank Jesus for the way his humanity relates to and connects with your daily life, and thank Jesus for the way his divinity lifts you above the challenges and entanglements of this world.
