Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 5:12, Luke 4:16-21

Sermon: Ten Commands; Ten Ways of Being: Be Disciplined

Deuteronomy 5:12 (New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition)
Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

Luke 4:16-21 (The Message)
He came to Nazareth where he had been raised. As he always did on the Sabbath, he went to the meeting place. When he stood up to read, he was handed the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written,

God’s Spirit is on me;
he’s chosen me to preach the Message of good news to the poor,
Sent me to announce pardon to prisoners and
recovery of sight to the blind,
To set the burdened and battered free,
to announce, “This is God’s time to shine!”

He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the assistant, and sat down. Every eye in the place was on him, intent. Then he started in, “You’ve just heard Scripture make history. It came true just now in this place.”

Key Idea of the Sermon
Fifteen centuries prior to Jesus, God worked through Moses to liberate the Israelite people from slavery in Egypt. Moses also prepared God’s people for a return to a land of promise and a life of freedom with a set of ten key Divine commands. These commands have served as a reliable framework for a faithful relationship with God, as well as a helpful foundation for living in community. Each command is paired with a story of Jesus that shows us how to fulfill each command. God’s commands invite us to a way of being. Last Sunday we were encouraged to remain mindful of the Divine abiding presence so that we keep our words respectful for God and others, while opening us to daily moments of awe. Today, Jesus exemplifies the need to be disciplined as we obey the command to keep the Sabbath.

Questions for Reflection

• Did you grow up in a home that observed the Sabbath? If so, in what ways? How has that shaped your own practice of Sabbath observance? How have you embraced new Sabbath practices?

• Sabbath observance is connected to God’s rest following the work of creation. Do you follow periods of work or activity with rest? What restful activities renew your body, mind, and soul?

• Moses commands that everyone in your household and community should enjoy a Sabbath rest. How do you support and empower others for their Sabbath observance?

A Spiritual Practice to Try
Luke says of Jesus: As he always did, Jesus spent his Sabbath in a gathering of the faithful. Discuss a plan in your household for how you can be more disciplined in your worship and your rest. This week take the first step toward fulfilling that plan.
