Sermon: Ten Commands, Ten Ways of Being: Be Humble
Deuteronomy 5:8 (New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition)
You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above or that is on the earth beneath or that is in the water under the earth.
Luke 6:12-19 (The Message)
At about that same time he climbed a mountain to pray. He was there all night in prayer before God. The next day he summoned his disciples; from them he selected twelve he designated as apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, Andrew, his brother, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James, son of Alphaeus, Simon, called the Zealot, Judas, son of James, Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
Coming down off the mountain with them, he stood on a plain surrounded by disciples, and was soon joined by a huge congregation from all over Judea and Jerusalem, even from the seaside towns of Tyre and Sidon. They had come both to hear him and to be cured of their diseases. Those disturbed by evil spirits were healed. Everyone was trying to touch him—so much energy surging from him, so many people healed!
Key Idea of the Sermon
Fifteen centuries prior to Jesus, God worked through Moses to liberate the Israelite people from slavery in Egypt. Moses also prepared God’s people for a return to a land of promise and a life of freedom with a set of ten key Divine commands. These commands have served as a reliable framework for a faithful relationship with God, as well as a helpful foundation for living in community. Each command is paired with a story of Jesus that shows us how to fulfill each command. God’s commands invite us to a way of being. Today we are challenged to be humble, with inspiration from the way Jesus humbled himself in prayer prior to making an important decision.
Questions for Reflection
• Humility is essential if we are to avoid making ourselves or anyone else or anything else a substitute for God? How do you define a humble spirit? How do you nurture your humility before God?
• Jesus spent the entire night in prayer before selecting twelve apostles (those sent out in ministry) from among a larger group of disciples (students of his way). Jesus humbled himself and sought God’s wisdom. When have you experienced the blessing of a wise and humble leader in your life? What important decision are you facing that requires humility before God?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
Jesus remained humble through prayer. Choose and practice a spiritual discipline like prayer, fasting, worship, serving others, quiet walks, singing, or Bible study as a focus this week. Pay attention to the way this practice humbles you before God.
