Scripture Reading: Psalm 114
Sermon: God’s Wonders
Psalm 114
1 When Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
2 Judah became God’s sanctuary,
Israel his dominion.
3 The sea looked and fled;
Jordan turned back.
4 The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.
5 Why is it, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
6 O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?
7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob, 8 who turns the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a spring of water.”
Key Idea of the Sermon
Psalm 114 is an ancient hymn sung at Passover (Matthew 26:17-30), the celebration of God as Liberator and Deliverer. The hymn recalls God’s wonders on behalf of the Israelites, God’s people. God led them from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 12:29-32). God rescued them from Egypt’s advancing army by making a way in the sea (Exodus 14:15-16). And God ushered them into the Promised Land by pausing the flow of the River Jordan to allow a safe crossing (Joshua 3:15-17)). The earth itself, with its hills and mountains and rivers and seas, trembled in awe before the wonders of the Lord. Even when the people complained against Moses and God because of thirst, the Lord turned a rock into a pool of water (Exodus 17:1-7). In light of God’s wonders, surely we can trust God’s deliverance from our oppressors.
Questions for Reflection
• What is the hardship you are facing in your life? What would it look like to trust God the Deliverer?
• Read two other hymns of praise to our Deliverer: the Song of Moses in Exodus 15:1-18, and the Song of Miriam in Exodus 15:20-21. What would be the lyrics of your hymn of praise for God’s wonders in your life?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
This week use music as a way to connect with and praise God. Choose music that opens your heart and lifts your spirit. Listen, sing, or dance with your feelings, thoughts, and movements offered to God as a joyful gift. Share this gift in community or alone with God, your Deliverer.
