Scripture Reading:
Sermon: A Harvest of Forgiveness
Psalm 130
A Song of Ascents.
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. 2 Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! 3 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. 5 I wait for the Lord; my soul waits, and in his word I hope; 6 my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for t
Key Idea of the Sermon
Today’s Psalm is among those called Songs of Ascent. These were songs used by pilgrims as they climbed the mount in Jerusalem where the Temple was located for one of the Pilgrimage Festivals. The Festival of Tabernacles or Booths in the fall celebrated the fruit (grapes and olives) harvest and God’s faithfulness during the wilderness wanderings. The Festival of Passover in the spring celebrated the barley harvest and the Divine deliverance of the Exodus. The Festival of Weeks or Pentecost was fifty days after Passover and celebrated the wheat harvest and the gift of Torah. Scholars think Psalm 130 may have been used by worshipers as an act of penitence when entering the Temple. The more mindful we become of the holy presence of God the more we are aware of our unworthiness and need for forgiveness. This ancient song offers the good news that with our God there is forgiveness, steadfast love, and redemption
Questions for Reflection
• Read the calling story of Isaiah in the book bearing his name, chapter six, verses one through eight. Isaiah reveals the same need for penitence we see in Psalm 130. When have you had an experience like Isaiah’s? How did God’s grace come to you? How did the experience change the course of your life?
• Redemption refers to the way forgiveness delivers one from the afflictions caused by sin. How has sin caused pain in your life and the lives of others who were impacted by it? How has God’s grace delivered you from that pain?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
Spend some time every day sitting quietly and humbly in the presence of God. Be honest about the ways you miss the mark of living the loving way of Jesus. Ask for forgiveness, make things right, let go of the guilt and remorse, learn your lessons, and be forgiving.
