Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
Scripture Lesson
Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025
Scripture Reading: Acts 18:24-27
Sermon: Life in the Spirit, Learning & Encouraging
Acts 18: 24-27
Now there came to Ephesus a Jew named Apollos from Alexandria. He was an eloquent man, well-versed in the scriptures. He had been instructed in the Way of the Lord, and he spoke with burning enthusiasm and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him they took him aside and explained the Way of God to him more accurately. And when he wished to cross over to Achaia, the brothers and sisters encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. On his arrival he greatly helped those who through grace had become believers.
Key Idea of the Sermon
Our final passage from the Acts of the Apostles is a story from Paul’s Third (and final) Missionary Journey. It begins in Corinth and ends in Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, Paul is arrested. Before his accusers and the local authorities, he appeals to the emperor. This appeal is granted and the remainder of the story of Acts follows Paul on the journey to Rome. There, Paul is under house arrest, waiting for an imperial judgment. He concludes his ministry proclaiming the good news about Jesus, receiving guests, and corresponding with those he has served. This is where the story in Acts ends. Tradition holds that Paul died by execution as a martyr. Today’s story reminds us that we must always be developing, instructing, and encouraging the next generation of servant-leaders in Christ.
Questions for Reflection
• Who is the Apollos in your life? What are the gifts you see in this person that translate into the calling of being an ambassador of Jesus in the ministry of reconciliation?
• What are the lessons you can share with the Apollos in your life to strengthen their ministry? What can you learn? How can you both be encouraged?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
Be intentional about mentoring the Apollos in your life. Pray for them daily. Work with this person to establish a schedule and agenda for sharing and growing in faith together.
