Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
Scripture Lesson

Scripture Reading: Acts 9:26-31
Sermon: Life in the Spirit, New Friends
Acts 6:26-31
When he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples, and they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him, brought him to the apostles, and described for them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus. So he went in and out among them in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord. He spoke and argued with the Hellenists, but they were attempting to kill him. When the brothers and sisters learned of it, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus. Meanwhile the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was built up. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.
Key Idea of the Sermon
Even though Christ had given Saul a brand-new mission “as an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and Kings and before the people of Israel” (Acts 9:15), Saul’s reputation preceded him as a persecutor of disciples of the Way. No wonder the leaders of the church in Jerusalem were afraid of him. Thankfully, a disciple named Barnabas who had witnessed Saul’s change in Damascus, vouched for him. The action of Barnabas was crucial to Saul’s acceptance as a true disciple who won the favor and support of the leaders of the Way in Jerusalem, propelling his ministry.
Questions for Reflection
• The name Barnabas means “son of encouragement”. Do you have a Barnabas in your life? What difference has that person made in your life? Have you thanked them? Who needs you to be a Barnabas for them?
• Saul turned Paul as a disciple and leader of the Way, played a major role in the advance of the church across the Roman empire. Very few of us are called to have such a big role, but that doesn’t mean smaller roles aren’t just as important. Without Barnabas Paul may not have received the support of the leaders of the church in Jerusalem, which was essential to Paul’s success. Can you connect the dots for the way your quiet support and encouragement of others can make a big difference?
• Read John 15:12-17. How does it feel to know that Jesus claims you as a friend?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
Think about your circle of friends as people Christ has given you to serve and encourage. Identify a need you can meet among your friends as an ambassador for Christ, and then meet it.
