Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
Scripture Lesson

Scripture Reading: John 21:9-14
Sermon: New Life, Sharing a Meal
John 21:9-14
When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them, and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Key Idea of the Sermon
Now what? The disciples have encountered the Risen Christ. They have received the gift of his peace. They have received the gift of his Spirit. Jesus has sent them to serve in the world. But things have changed. Prior to Jesus’ death and resurrection, they followed where Jesus led, now they are to lead. Sometimes when you are not sure about the next step, you let muscle memory kick-in. The disciples returned to where their ministry with Jesus began, the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was waiting for them there; in fact, he prepared a meal for them. Could it be that wherever they go, the Risen One would be there too? Could that be true for us?
Questions for Reflection
• How do you hear the Risen Christ calling you to lead in his way of grace and peace? What are the opportunities you might meet to advance the values of God’s kingdom come? How does your gift help you decide what to do?
• Is your commitment to spiritual practice strengthening your muscle memory as a disciple?
• How is your fellowship with Christ nourishing and renewing you?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
This week pay special attention to the way the Risen Christ is meeting you in the places you go. Allow Christ to nourish and strengthen you to do his work along the path you are traveling together.
