Lessons from Loss
Mourning my son’s death has taught me that it is possible to hold multiple emotions at the same time. It is true that this season of mourning is dominated by sadness but that is not all there is. When I remember my faith, I have hope. When our family tells favorite stories and memories, we share laughter and smiles. When I advance Adam’s legacy of learning, teaching, and advocacy I experience renewed purpose. When I get outside of myself to help others there is a return of a sense of contribution and contentment.
As you move through the losses in your life, it is necessary to turn toward the pain, but remember that there is still room for other emotions too. May God’s grace in Christ sprinkle in moments of peace, hope, happiness, and purpose too.
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7)
Yours in Christ,
Marc
