In January, 2005, Friedens was invited to participate in a charity drive to send blankets and shoes to an orphanage in Afganistan that houses 750 children aged 12 and under. The orphanage is near an army base where some of the soldiers are making the best of a not so great situation by engaging in 'missionary' initiatives....one is to get 700 blankets for the entire orphanage. After the drive began, it was expanded to include shoes when the pictures started coming in.
